چکیده

Supplemental Data Figure S1. Intrinsic photosensitivity of CSF-contacting neurons in the PVO. Apparent light response observed in normal ACSF (black trace) persisted during the bath application of 1 µM TTX (red trace). Although action potentials were blocked, light-induced depolarization was unaffected by bath application of TTX. hv: light stimulus.

Melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells: architecture, projections, and intrinsic photosensitivity.

The primary circadian pacemaker, in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the mammalian brain, is photoentrained by light signals from the eyes through the retinohypothalamic tract. Retinal rod and cone cells are not required for photoentrainment. Recent evidence suggests that the entraining photoreceptors are retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) that project to the SCN. The visual pigment for this pho...

Drosophila CRY Is a Deep Brain Circadian Photoreceptor

cry (cryptochrome) is an important clock gene, and recent data indicate that it encodes a critical circadian photoreceptor in Drosophila. A mutant allele, cry(b), inhibits circadian photoresponses. Restricting CRY expression to specific fly tissues shows that CRY expression is needed in a cell-autonomous fashion for oscillators present in different locations. CRY overexpression in brain pacemak...

Vertebrate ancient-long opsin: a green-sensitive photoreceptive molecule present in zebrafish deep brain and retinal horizontal cells.

Nonretinal/nonpineal photosensitivity has been found in the brain of vertebrates, but the molecular basis for such a "deep brain" photoreception system remains unclear. We conducted an extensive search for brain opsin cDNAs of the zebrafish (Danio rerio), a useful animal model for genetic studies, and we have isolated a partial cDNA clone encoding an ortholog of vertebrate ancient (VA) opsin, t...

Expression of Novel Opsins and Intrinsic Light Responses in the Mammalian Retinal Ganglion Cell Line RGC-5. Presence of OPN5 in the Rat Retina

The vertebrate retina is known to contain three classes of photoreceptor cells: cones and rods responsible for vision, and intrinsically photoresponsive retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) involved in diverse non-visual functions such as photic entrainment of daily rhythms and pupillary light responses. In this paper we investigated the potential intrinsic photoresponsiveness of the rat RGC line, RGC...

Microinjection of phycomyces: selection of a strain for possible biological assay of photoreceptor pigment.

For a study of sensory transduction in Phycomnyces (3), information about the photoreceptor is important. Since action spectra for the light response of this organism (2, 4) tend to resemble some flavoprotein absorption spectra, it is plausible to try biochemical fractionation procedures to isolate flavoproteins from sporangiophores, using wild type and photomutant strains (G. Meissner and R. H...
